Former Miss Turkey sentenced to 14-months in jail for insulting the country's President on Instagram

A court in Istabul today,  Tuesday  31, convicted a former Miss Turkey of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan through social media postings and gave her a 14-month suspended sentence. 27-year-old Merve Buyuksarac was found guilty of insulting a public official but immediately suspended the sentence on condition that she does not reoffend within the next five years. Her lawyer, Emre Telci, said he would file a formal objection to the verdict and appeal her case at the Strasbourg, France-based European Court of Justice. Buyuksarac, who was crowned Miss Turkey in 2006, was briefly detained last year for sharing a satirical poem on her Instagram account in 2014. The posting, an satarical adaptation of the Turkish national anthem, was shared thosands of times on social media, and it was considered by proscutors to be insulting to Mr Erdogan, who was then prime minister. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday said President Muhammadu Buhari would never dictate to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and other security agencies on who to investigate or release in the course of the ongoing anti-corruption war. He said the present administration had given the agencies the independence to use their discretion in carrying out their duties. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has formally received a petition asking the agency to probe ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on the alleged mismanagement of Billions of Dollars that was released to the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for arms purchase. The petition is also requesting the EFCC to invite Jonathan for interrogation on why he made N400m public funds available to a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, for personal and private party use. Details of the first petition the EFCC will formally receive demanding the investigation of Jonathan. According to findings, the petition dated May 24, 2016 came from a former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Ikenna Ejezie, through his counsel, Barrister Osuagwu Ugochukwu. Niger Delter Invaders blow up NNPC pipelines in Warri

Several pipelines owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC around Batan community in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State were blown up late Thursday night by militant group, Niger Delta Avengers. The group in  a series of tweets claimed they were able to carry out their activity despite heavy military presence around the area. The blown up pipelines which are said to be managed by Pipelines and Product Marketing Company and Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Ltd, subsidiaries of NNPC, are said to be very strategic to the country’s oil production output.

Naira Increased Value Against The Dollar

As at Wednesday, it was reported that the Nigerian currency traded between N340 and N341 to a dollar at the close of trading, from N345 it exchanged on Monday. The Pound Sterling and the Euro also traded between N480 and N488 and N380, N385 against the naira, respectively. Meanwhile the official Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) rate remained at N197 to the dollar. Traders at the market informed our news source that trading at the market went undisturbed by the industrial action called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Labour suspends strike, by Tinubu

The Ayuba Wabba led-faction of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) held a meeting on Sunday in Abuja on the on-going protest action against the increase in pump price of petroleum products and hike in electricity tariff. A communique Wabba co-signed with Peter Ozo-Eson, NLC general secretary, said NEC reviewed the protest action and its impact across the nation, noting the sacrifices of its members, response of the generality of Nigerians, government’s attitude and the brutality of the police in some states. It stated that NEC took special notice of the Ebonyi State Police Command “where our members were intimidated, harassed, arrested and detained unjustly.” It reads: “After an exhaustive deliberation, NEC noted its protest action was informed by the twin issues of the unjustified and illegal hike in electricity tariff and increase in the pump price of petroleum products. Labour Union Ends Strike Called To Resist New Petrol Price

The Ayuba Wabba faction of the Nigeria Labour Congress has suspended an industrial action called to resist the new price of petrol. The leader of the union announced the suspension on Sunday. It came after an emergency meeting of its organs – the National Working Committee and the National Executive Committee. At the meeting, talks were focused on the strike and the way forward. Mr Wabba said the strike was suspended due to the intervention of well-meaning Nigerians including the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Bola Tinubu. In a statement issued after the meeting, Comrade Wabba said the industrial action was informed by the twin issues of the unjustified and illegal hike in electricity tariff and increase in the pump price of petrol. The Congress also announced plans to resume negotiations with the Federal Government, with a view to resolving the issues that prompted the strike. The Lagos State Government will formally welcome President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, May 23, 2016 on a two-day working visit to the State. It will be President Buhari’s first official visit to the state since he assumed office about a year ago. FRSC To Carry Out a 6 Day Nationwide Monitoring of Tyres

In continuation of the just concluded Stakeholders’ forum on tyres held on the 9 th May 2016, at Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, and the free vehicle tyre safety check that is ongoing nationwide, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi, has ordered a 6 day monitoring and surveillance exercise to be led by 9 of its topmost Management Staff and all Zonal Commanding Officers to sustain the free vehicle safety checks in field commands. According to the Head Media Relations and Strategy, Bisi Kazeem, the exercise which is to commence on Monday 23 rd May 2016, was borne out of the Corps Marshal’s wish to stem the tide of road traffic crashes caused by substandard and expired tyres.
